Not-for-profit status

Mary Washington Healthcare operates under a not-for-profit status.  Fiscal transparency is optimized by sharing income and spending information with the public to demonstrate how the corporation serves the community.  A complete overview of that financial status can be accessed on its Regulatory Documents page.

As a not-for-profit corporation, Mary Washington Healthcare also invests profits back into the organization and the community.  Continuous upgrading of technology, broadening services and hiring highly qualified staff translates into numerous benefits for patients who enjoy better quality services and a wider scope of care.

A not-for-profit status also means that Mary Washington Health System provides care for all members of the community, regardless of their ability to pay for services.  Financial assistance is readily available for those who need it the most.

Driven by community benefits

Mary Washington Healthcare takes an active role in investing in the health of the communities it serves through a comprehensive Community Benefit Strategy.

These strategies allow the organization to create programs and activities that provide treatment and/or promote health and healing, increasing access to healthcare to various and vulnerable populations.

A Community Benefit must not only respond to an identified need, it must also meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Improve access to healthcare services
  • Enhance health of the community
  • Advance medical or health knowledge
  • Relieve or reduce the burden of government or other nonprofit community efforts

Some examples of Community Benefits include health screenings for early diagnosis and referral, patient and family counseling, direct and indirect support to safety-net providers, ongoing health education efforts, and expanding volunteer opportunities for staff, affiliated physicians and community groups.

Since 1993, more than $11 million has been allocated by Community Benefit Funds to more than 400 programs to address access, prevention, education and lifestyle healthcare needs.

Volunteerism is strongly encouraged among Mary Washington Healthcare associates and physicians.  The iVolunteer program seeks participation in Community Benefit programs and other related activities.  Key elements of this program include mini-grants for Community Benefit programs, iVolunteer Days that brings together internal and external groups to raise awareness of programs and community services, and iVolunteer Awards.

Mary Washington Healthcare also provides a web-based information system known as the Community Health Information Resource Tool (CHIR).  CHIR provides access to data that can improve the health of local communities and plays a key role in tracking best practices and the continuous assessment of need and the implementation of Community Benefit Programs.

When is Medicare open enrollment for Mary Washington Health System?

There are several times when you can enroll in Medicare, Medicare Advantage Plans, and Medicare Supplements.  Mary Washington Medicare Advantage will follow the same CMS guidelines as other Medicare Advantage plans for enrollment dates.

The Initial Enrollment Period is the first time you can sign up encompasses a seven-month period, including:

  • The 3 months before your 65th birthday
  • The month of your birthday
  • The 3 months after your birthday

Special enrollment periods are also available for those people who were working at age 65 for an employer with more than 20 employees and who had healthcare coverage through that employer, a union or through a spouse’s job.  Enrollment can take place while the other insurance is still active or during the eight months after the coverage ends.

If you miss either of these enrollment periods you can sign up for Parts A and B between January 1 and March 31, with coverage beginning July 1 of the year you sign up.

The Open Enrollment Period (also called the Annual Election Period) takes place each year from October 15 to December 7.  The following stipulations apply:

  • Anyone with Medicare Parts A & B can switch to a Part C plan.
  • Anyone with Medicare Part C can switch back to Parts A & B.
  • Anyone who has or is signing up for Medicare Parts A or B can join, drop or switch a Part D prescription drug plan.
  • Anyone with Medicare Part C can switch to a new Part C plan.

Coverage will start January 1 of the following year.

Enrolling in Medicare Advantage Plans

The Annual Election Period to enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan is October 15 through December 7.  This is when consumers will be able to enroll in the Mary Washington Medicare Advantage plan.

An annual Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period allows any person the opportunity to change plans if they are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan on January 1. This annual period also runs from January 1 to March 31.

Both the individual and the annual Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period allow Medicare beneficiaries already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan a one-time election to either:

  1. Switch to a different Advantage plan, or
  2. Switch from a Medicare Advantage plan to Original Medicare and a standalone Part D plan

Using Medicare supplement insurance at Mary Washington Health System

Medicare Supplement Insurance pays for some healthcare costs that Original Medicare does not cover.  Known as Medigap policies, they are sold by private companies and can cover expenses such as deductibles, copayments and coinsurance.

Some Medigap policies may also provide additional coverage for services not covered by Original Medicare as well.  This may include coverage for when you travel outside of the United States.

Medigap policies typically don’t cover services such as vision or dental services, hearing aids, long-term care and other needs.  It is best to check with a provider on the exact coverage before purchasing a Medigap plan.

When using a Medigap plan at Mary Washington Health System, you need to be aware of several things:

  • Medicare will pay its share of an approved amount for services and then Medigap will pay its share.
  • To be able to purchase a Medigap policy, you must have Medicare Parts A and B. A separate premium will be required in addition to your Part B payment.
  • A Medigap policy is not a Medicare Advantage Plan. Advantage plans provide benefits, while Medigap policies only supplement Original Medicare benefits.
  • A Medigap policy only covers one person. You must buy separate policies for each person you intend to cover.
  • Medigap policies sold after January 1, 2006 are not allowed to cover prescription drug coverage. If you want prescription drug coverage, you can join Medicare Part D.
  • If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, it is illegal for an agent to sell you a Medigap plan.

The Mary Washington Healthcare Alliance (Medicare)

As part of a changing way to deliver healthcare to Medicare patients, Mary Washington Healthcare has teamed with area providers to form an Accountable Care Organization (ACO).  The goal is for healthcare providers to band together to provide coordinated and high quality care at a lower cost to Medicare patients.  After initially completing three years in the Medicare Shared Savings Program, the Mary Washington Healthcare Alliance was formed.

It is considered a Next Generation ACO and is only one of 51 such participants and will provide an enhanced quality of care at lower costs to Medicare patients. The Alliance chose to participate in the Next Generation ACO Model because it believes this model allows the best opportunity to shift patient care away from a clinical model built for the fee-for-service payment environment and towards a whole-person population health-focused clinical model.

Dozens of area providers in numerous specialties have banded together to provide this next level of fiscally responsible care.  Those Mary Washington Health Alliance members include:

Mary Washington Patient Financial Assistance Program (PFAP)

As part of an ongoing commitment to the community, Mary Washington Health System provides medically necessary and emergency health services to all people, regardless of their ability to pay.  The Patient Financial Assistance Programs respect each person’s dignity and privacy by offering free or discounted medical services to those who can demonstrate need and meet eligibility requirements.

Homeowners may qualify for assistance since Mary Washington does not count what a home is worth when reviewing the ability to pay for treatment.  The first $10,000 in bank accounts or cash is also not counted.

Free care helps families with combined incomes that are at or less than 200% percent of the federal government’s poverty guidelines.

Patients can qualify for help if they do not have health insurance or receive treatment for a non-covered service.  Patients also qualify if they aren’t eligible for any government health benefits such as Medicaid.
