Review of Miami Jewish Health System in Florida

What is Miami Jewish Health Systems?

The beginnings of the Miami Jewish Health Systems first started when the Miami Jewish Home for the Aged opened its doors to the community in 1940.  Over time, the organization grew to include an on-campus hospital, assisted and independent-living facilities, several specialty clinics and the introduced a number of innovative diversion programs such as the Program for All-Inclusive Care (PACE) to deliver healthcare services to the local community.

To better reflect the comprehensive focus of its efforts, the name was eventually changed to Miami Jewish Health Systems.  Today, more than 12,000 people are served annually through more than a dozen health care programs and services with patients ranging from 5 to 105 years old.  Miami Jewish Health Systems promotes longer, healthier and more enriched lives for patients and residents of all ages, cultures and faiths.  The comprehensive system serves the community with six sites across Miami-Dade and Broward counties with the vast majority of services located on a 25-acre campus in Miami.

Miami Jewish Health Systems provides rehabilitation, medical care and research, including the Rosomoff Comprehensive Rehabilitation Center, Brucker Biofeedback and Stein Innovation & Research Institute.

Cutting edge Alzheimer’s research, including the Girsh Memory Enrichment Institute, is a one-of-a-kind, comprehensive program for individuals with cognitive impairment and their caregivers, designed to delay the progression of memory disorders.

Residential living facilities provide safe assisted and independent living. This includes market-rate and low-income housing. And although it began as a nursing home, about two-thirds of program participants live at home, reflecting a desire to keep people out of nursing homes whenever possible.  A variety of community programs keep thousands of seniors in their own homes in a safe and supervised way.  Those who live in the organization’s nursing facilities enjoy a patient-centric approach that offers specialized care at any level of function.

Charitable Activities

The Miami Jewish Foundation cultivates philanthropic support for patient services, facilities, program and service development, indigent care, medical education and research.

First formed in 2004, much of the Foundation’s work in the early years was the preservation of endowment funds and the funding of capital projects to help Miami Jewish Health Systems become the largest and most innovative provider of healthcare for seniors in the Southeast.

The Foundation still supports the needs of the home and hospital, but also focuses on keeping Miami Jewish Health Systems at the forefront of dynamic healthcare for senior citizens. Partnering with generous donors, the emphasis remains on expanding care, physical space and research to bring a high level of health care to the community.

Miami Jewish Health Systems Latin Auxiliary raises funds to maintain and expand the Music Therapy Program with a full-time Board Certified Music Therapist, as well as musical instruments, a wide range of music media and recordings, equipment and resources, all for the purpose of promoting the well-being and dignity of its program participants.

The Miami Jewish Health Systems Auxiliary supports several education and socialization enrichment programs and activities for residents.  They also sponsor Love on Wheels, a campus enrichment program that funds the salaries of 10 part-time wheelchair transporters, whose sole responsibility is to move residents to and from various activities throughout the Douglas Gardens campus.
